How to Build Resilience During Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Injury Recovery

How to Build Resilience During Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Injury Recovery

You're six weeks postpartum.

Or recovering from a hysterectomy.

Or your doctor just told you to stop running for a few weeks because of a knee injury.

You know your body needs time to heal, but your mind keeps asking:

"What if I lose everything I've worked for?"

It's one of the biggest fears active women face.

Whether it is–

  • Pregnancy recovery

  • Return to exercise after birth

  • Navigating uncertainty with c-section recovery

Many people think recovery means doing nothing.

It doesn't.

Recovery is not passive—it requires intention.

Pregnancy, postpartum, surgery, injury rehabilitation, and major life transitions are all seasons of planned recovery. You may know your physical capacity will change, but that doesn't mean your growth has to stop.

Three Questions to Ask Yourself While You're Waiting

Instead of asking, "When can I get back to normal?" ask yourself:

  • What can I do to care for myself today?

  • What is still within my control?

  • Can I let go of what I can't control and trust that I'll handle what's next?

Every facet of life includes seasons of waiting.

While they're temporary, they often shape who we become- for better or for worse.

The biggest mistake people make is treating these seasons as though life is on pause.

It isn't.

Waiting isn't the absence of progress—it's where resilience is built.

The habits you practice now become the foundation you'll rely on when life speeds up again.

The Waiting Well Framework

When I work with clients during recovery, we focus on four principles:

  • Protect what you can control.

  • Adjust your expectations instead of fighting your current capacity.

  • Keep building healthy habits that fit this season.

  • Prepare your future self instead of trying to recreate your past.

What you do during recovery often determines how you return afterward.

Whether you're waiting for:

  • your due date,

  • an injury to heal,

  • your children to become more independent,

  • or simply a season when life feels less overwhelming,

your daily habits matter.

Resilience isn't built after life settles down.

It's built in the middle of uncertainty.

Unfortunately, our world teaches that self-care is something we earn after burnout—a bubble bath, a vacation, or a weekend away.

Those things are wonderful, but they're not the foundation of resilience.

Real self-care means noticing your changing capacity, responding to your body's needs, and making small adjustments before you reach the point of exhaustion.

That's what helps you recover well.

What Does the Research Say?

Research consistently shows that successful recovery is about more than rest. Long-term resilience in athletes is supported by:

  • Healthy daily habits that are repeated consistently, how it takes to form a habit will depend on the individual. (1)

  • Nervous system regulation, which helps your body adapt to physical and emotional stress. (2)

  • Progressive loading, gradually rebuilding strength and capacity instead of rushing back too soon. (3)

  • Postpartum Recovery that is individualized and includes shared decision making (4)

  • Recovery strategies that balance stress with adequate rest, nutrition, sleep, and movement. (5)

Despite what you might have been led to believe – recovery isn't about losing fitness.

This is a big challenge for many of the active women I help who are preparing for postpartum recovery and return to exercise after birth.

Working together during pregnancy, postpartum, or after surgery, we create your unique wellness pathway so that you can create the conditions that allow your body to adapt and come back stronger.

I don't believe resilience comes from pushing harder.

My work isn't about helping women simply survive pregnancy, postpartum, or injury.

It's about helping them emerge stronger because of those experiences.

If movement is part of your identity, slowing down can feel incredibly frustrating.

But whatever you're waiting for, you don't have to spend this season just trying to get through it.

You can use it to build resilience, confidence, and a stronger foundation for everything that comes next.
